What skills do teenagers need
in an AI world?
AI is automating routine tasks faster than any previous technology shift. But it is not replacing human skills — it is amplifying them. The teenagers who will thrive are not the ones who avoid AI or master it. They are the ones who have built the underlying human capabilities that AI makes more valuable: collaboration, critical thinking, communication, creativity, and judgment. Those skills are built through real experience. They start now.
The framing around AI and teenagers tends toward two extremes: either AI will make skills irrelevant, or AI will destroy job opportunities before today's students are ready to compete. Both are wrong in the same way — they focus on what AI does to skills rather than what AI does to the value of human skills.
The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025 projects that 39% of core workplace skills will change by 2030 as AI moves into everyday workflows. That is not a prediction that skills stop mattering. It is a prediction that the wrong skills stop mattering — and that the right ones become more valuable. The skills projected to grow in importance are specifically the ones AI cannot replicate: analytical thinking, creative thinking, resilience, flexibility, motivation, and self-awareness.
At the enterprise level, this is already showing up in hiring and development strategy. Alex Laurs, Chief Learning and Development Officer for EY Americas, described in June 2026 how EY is investing heavily in what he called "truly uniquely human skills" — the capabilities that AI augments rather than replaces. Collaboration, creativity, communication, empathy, critical thinking, and systems thinking are the areas EY's Future Skills Lab is prioritizing. These are not new skills. They are the skills that have always mattered, now amplified by the contrast with what AI can do instead.
These are the capabilities that become more valuable as AI handles more of the routine, repetitive, and procedural work. They are built through real experience, not through studying them. And they are exactly what most students are already developing through the activities in their lives — they just have no way to see it.
AI can generate answers. Humans have to evaluate them. The ability to analyze, question assumptions, and make sound judgments became the most sought skill by employers in 2025 — specifically because AI makes everyone's output look polished while making judgment harder to verify.
AI works alone. Teams of people with different perspectives, navigating real disagreements toward shared goals, produce outcomes AI cannot replicate. Every team sport, group project, and community effort a teenager participates in builds this directly.
AI can draft. Humans have to build trust, read a room, adapt tone in real time, and navigate difficult conversations. These skills are built through every interaction — not through prompting a model.
AI recombines what exists. Genuine creative judgment — identifying what problem is worth solving, what constraint to break, what no one has tried — requires human perspective built through real experience and curiosity.
AI models are static until retrained. Humans who have navigated setbacks, changing plans, and unexpected challenges have built the tolerance for ambiguity that every employer now specifically says they cannot find in new graduates.
Experience builds judgment. The teenager who has managed a team, handled a difficult situation at a job, or led through a losing season has developed something that cannot be prompted into existence. Judgment is the compounding asset of a skills record built over time.
There are two things AI genuinely changes for teenagers right now that parents should understand clearly.
AI raises the floor on credentials while eliminating them as differentiators. When AI can generate a polished essay, a clean resume, and a confident interview script for any teenager with access to a phone, the credential gap between students narrows dramatically. What remains as a differentiator is documented, real experience that proves capability behind the polished output. A student who can describe what they actually built, what they figured out, and how they grew has something AI cannot generate for them. A student whose record is entirely AI-assisted has nothing to fall back on when the credential is questioned.
AI removes the baseline skill-building experiences that used to happen automatically. This is the concern EY's Laurs flagged directly: as AI takes over routine tasks at work, the entry-level experiences that used to build foundational skills in young people disappear. A teenager who uses AI to complete every assignment, draft every message, and navigate every problem avoids the productive struggle that builds judgment, critical thinking, and resilience. The skills don't disappear as a requirement — they become harder to develop and easier to fake, which makes the real thing more valuable.
The goal is not to use AI less. It is to build the human skills that make AI useful. A teenager who has developed genuine critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills is dramatically more capable with AI than one who has only learned to prompt it. The skills come first. The tool amplifies them.
The skills AI amplifies are not built in a classroom through a curriculum unit on critical thinking. They are built through the real activities teenagers are already doing — and largely failing to document.
Running a Discord community builds collaboration and communication at scale. Competing in team sports builds adaptability and judgment under pressure. Volunteering at an event builds problem-solving and accountability in a real-world context. A part-time job builds professional communication and self-management in ways no course can replicate.
The activities are already happening. The translation gap is that students have no system to name what those activities built in them — no way to connect the lived experience to the professional skills language that employers and colleges use to evaluate candidates. That gap matters more in an AI world, not less. When AI can produce the words, the proof has to be in the record.
